Is a half dollar coins(50 cent pieces) still used in the United States?
I went to college in the US and I’ve never seen a half dollar coin(fifty cent piece) for the five years.
I’m traveling to the US this summer and my friend gave me a couple of 50 cent pieces(i.e. half dollar coins) for me as he can’t use them here in Korea.
My question is: can I use these 50 cent coins in the US? Are they still in use? Will the stores or public transit authorities accept those half dollar coins?
They are still valid currency. HOWEVER, they are not part of normal everyday circulation. In most cases, those coins are out of date and more valuable to coin collectors as collectable items than for the .50 they are worth in a shop.
Vending machines don’t really take them, but stores and banks will honor them.
