Functional Awsome
My red/white pembroke welsh corgi has a blue eye…Could she have blue merle in her pedigree?
I have a full-blood pembroke welsh corgi. She is AKC registered, and I received her from an accredited breeder for free because her blue eye isn’t permissable to the breeds’ standard. I love her blue eye, and the vet said she isn’t blind out of it and it’s fully functional. I read somewhere that blue merle isn’t in Pembrokes, but only in Cardigans. How do you think she could’ve aquired that blue eye? I have her pedigree but know nothing about her background and I’m only familiar with the parents, not the grandparents or anything else. The breeder said this is her first blue eyed pup. Any thoughts would be awsome!
It’s a bluie I believe- which just means its a diluted version of the color. The blue eyes goes with the color. It’s not ALWAYS associated with being a blue merle- huskies can have blue eyes as well.
I believe if it WAS an indicator of being a blue merle than it would be a mixed-breed not a true Pem.
You can see dilution of color in Beagles as well- or in cats (like a dilute Calico or tortoiseshell.) The dilution “mutes” the black into a grey; and you are more likely to get blue eyes as a result.
Since the blue eyes aren’t desirable that means you get a great pet.
If it were a Cardigan- you CAN get “hidden” merles- a friend had a cryptic blue merle that appeared to be a tri-color. The ONLY sign of merle he had on an apparently otherwise typical tri-color (which he wasn’t) was a few spots on one ear and a tiny patch of grey on his shoulder.
The gene to be “merle” is a pattern on a color; a dog that is genetically tri-color with the merle gene will be a blue merle; a dog that is sable with the merle gene will be a sable or red merle (which can be very hard to spot.)
I wonder if the “bluie” is the same thing since it seems to be a dilution of an otherwise standard color- a diluted tri-color or a diluted sable- not one gene responsible for the “color” but two.
From the AKC breed standard on Pembroke Welsh Corgis:
“Very Serious Faults: Whitelies–Body color white, with red or dark markings. Bluies–Colored portions of the coat have a distinct bluish or smoky cast. This coloring is associated with extremely light or blue eyes, liver or gray eye rims, nose and lip pigment.”
