What is the role of the four-star general in the United States?

Four star Generals hold the highest peace time rank in the US military. The rank of five star only exists in time of war and is NEVER held by more than on person at a time. Asking the actual duties is somewhat like asking the duties of a corporate vice-president. The LEVEL is not necessarily tied to a specific set of duties.
