Any Martial Artists/Sword Enthusiast outh there?
Im a Martial Artist, and lover of rare swords, and Im very interested in finding/locating a reasonably priced sword forge that can reproduce a practical (functional sword) special kind of Japanese Double-edged sword called a ‘Tsurugi/Ken’. Now this will be a custom sword because this sword is VERY, VERY rare because it hasn’t been in use since about the 8th century of japan, and was consider a sword of nobles during the Asuka, and Nara eras, and fell out of vogue with japan as the need for a more curved sword for mounted combat arose. So I have 2 questions:
1.) Is anyone familiar with type of blade, it’s suguta (blade shape and form/details)
2.) Can anyone refer me to a forge or smith that I can commission to design this rare blade?
1) suguta of the tsurugi: the blade is symmetrical double-edge, roughly 28-40″ in length, 2 1/2 to 3″ wide, 3/8″ thick at the center. Material used in the construction varied depending on the period it was constructed in (bronze and iron typically).

2) It depends on how much money you have and if you want it forged by a Master Smith or if you want it forged by a capable but non-traditional smith.
You can see if Rick Barett (http://www.barrettcustomknives.com/) would be willing to create one for you. He works mostly in modern steels, but does a lot of custom work and makes some excellent swords. His prices could be reasonable to you, but I’m not sure how you are defining “reasonable” ($2000? $3000? a few hundred?). Another alternative would be to post this question on http://www.swordforum.com/forums/ and see if any of the smiths that frequent there would be willing and able to work with you.
