Under 3in blade

Why limit yourself to under a 3″ blade?
For me (and those like me), an EDC knife is primarily a tool, yet still must function as a weapon should the need arise. Given that, you want one with:
1. A sturdy blade. As a weapon, it doesn’t make much of a difference (some rolled up and sharpened paper can be used as a puncturing weapon in soft tissue), but my blades are used for hammering, prying, etc. and must be up to the task. My EDC is 1/8″ thick, and I still feel its on the light side. The steel also should be taken into account, however you’ll find many different opinions on this… personally, I prefer a moderate to high carbon steel.
2. Blade type. Avoid the tanto style blades with angles close to 90*, you want something with a good point on it to penetrate flesh if needed. Wharncliffe, drop points, and tanto blades with wider angles all fit the bill. Also, look for one with rounded or smoother serrations… they’re great for cutting things like rope, but you don’t want them catching on bone.
3. A blade of substantial size. 3″ is a little on the shallow side… mine is just shy of 4.75″ which IMO is close to perfect. Blade length doesn’t make much difference in the utility aspect other than with prying, so focus on the weapon part here. You need it to be long enough to reach vital organs… brain through the ocular sockets, all of the good stuff in the chest cavity, etc.
4. A strong locking mechanism. Most liner locks just don’t cut it (pun). Benchmade’s Axis lock is a very good choice, as is SOG’s similar mechanism. You don’t want the lock to break and cut your hand while you’re prying nails out of a wall or going full out sewing-machine on some thug trying to mug you.
5. Price point. Don’t expect to find a good blade that’ll last you at the dollar store (or Wal Mart), but you shouldn’t pay so much that you’ll feel bad about actually using and abusing it, breaking it, having to ditch it, or having it taken by the police if you have to defend yourself with it. Look in the $60-120 range.

Hope this helps.
