I want to start running first thing in the morning…should I eat something first or run on an empty stomach?

I really want to cut my bodyfat and figure running first thing in the morning would a good way to do it. But should I eat something before going out for a run, or just run on an empty stomach?

I used to think that skipping breakfast would make me burn more fat, but that was until I started taking my running seriously.

Since it’s early there’s rarely time for a full meal before a run (as you need time to digest too), so a light snack is usually sufficient. My favorite is a banana and a cup of black coffee. Generally you want something light that won’t irritate your stomach. There is no “best” food. Different things work for different people. While oatmeal may be great for some, others have trouble with it. You just have to try different things until you find something that works for you.

A small carb snack is often the best bet as proteins take longer to digest and you’ll be needing fast energy. Save your protein for after your run, but make sure you have carbs too. You need both to properly refuel your muscles.
