How Can Parents Help Children Comprehend and Defeat Irrational Fears
Many people, if not all, feel fear one day of their life; the difference between well-adjusted people and those who aren’t is that well altered people know how to use their fears for their advantage. Children are not excused from experiencing crippling fear, which is why parents should be more aware of this and the outcomes of horrors on their children. furthermore, supporters, of humanistic therapy claim that a healthy level of anxiety would be good for children; certainly, if a child’s life is anxiety-free, this isn’t going to prepare him or her for the reality that outside of the home, things aren’t as simple as they hope it would be. Humanistic Sandtray Therapy is a dynamic type of psychotherapy that lets clients express their innermost emotions by means of metaphor and symbol.
If you detect that your child has developed some kind of fear first consider what sort of fear this is and what abrupt consequence this has on your child. A good example is how teenagers are habitually concerned about academic performance and acceptance by their peers in the same way that toddlers often develop fears for indescribable and imaginative things such as monsters in the closet, the boogeyman, or anything similar. Children should be able to move from one level of fear to the next; for instance, a child who is afraid of monsters under the bed should be able to overcome this fright by the time he or she becomes a teenager; being unable to get over a fear can be unhealthy and may eventually affect the way that your child perform on a daily basis.
Children typically survive of their fears because they find ways to cope with these fears themselves, and are oftentimes more able to make sense of these fears in their own pace. Many parents need help in distinguishing real phobia from simple childhood fears; visiting therapists can help them make sense out of the apparent senselessness of such fears. Also, it’s important that their response to fear is not so harsh that they are unable to do anything else because they are paralyzed and disabled by this fear.
Real phobias may be challenging to handle without professional help; play therapy has already helped many children endure different kinds of issues. You’ll be surprised at how play therapy can help your child get past his or her phobia; in play therapy, children will often play out symbols of their fears like giant spiders or a big and scary stranger. It’s also important to note that parents can learn a lot through their children’s play therapy sessions because therapists usually encourage parent contribution.
Parents will know more about games and activities that can help children venture out of their comfort zone bit by bit; parents can also know more about what else they can do to help their children out. Use optimistic, supporting language in helping your child slowly get out of his or her comfort zone, but put importance on advancing instead of stagnating and refusing to move forward. At times it’s really best to seek professional help when dealing with children’s phobia; therapists are trained professionals that can give you more understanding concerning what you can do to actually help your child out of the phobia.
Being in denial or structuring your life to accommodate your child’s phobia is not the best way to handle this situation. Providing support for your child doesn’t mean that you must disregard and accommodate the phobia, it just connotes that you’ll give your child guidance and encouragement until he or she is able to overcome the unhealthy fear.
