How to Train for an Emergency Medical Technician Career
Emergency medical technicians are trained to handle a variety of trauma situations. Learning to assess the scene of an accident and help individuals according to their injuries are skills obtained inside educational training.
The level of schooling characterizes the training obtained when pursuing a career as an emergency medical technician, or EMT. The field is broken down into basic, intermediate, and paramedic programs. Vocational colleges provide the best training options for students wanting to step into this industry. The main objective in schooling is to teach students how to provide care in urgent situations. Treating hurt individuals and transporting them to the nearest hospital for medical care is focused on through a variety of courses. The level of training determines what medical tasks professionals can perform. On site job duties can include determining a patients pre-existing conditions, monitoring vital signs, and administering fluids. Students should begin their educational training by exploring vocational colleges that offer health care related programs.
In order to enter careers students are required to start training at the basic level and work their way up. Students can obtain careers after completing each educational level. Students that want to become paramedics need to successfully complete each level of training before obtaining their desired positions.
As an EMT basic students will learn how to transport patients to a hospital while working under more qualified professionals. Programs provide students with basic medical assistance skills. This often includes areas such as:
- Respiratory Management
- Cardiac Emergencies
- Patient Assessment
- Trauma
Continuing education provides students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and enter specialized areas of EMT work. This can include shock, cardiac, and trauma. For example, training inside an EMT-cardiac program trains students to examine heart rhythms and administer medication. In general, students will receive advanced training that focuses on giving oxygen, glucose, and epinephrine. Coursework will include subjects on emergency pharmacology and venous access. The work conducted by intermediate EMTs varies considerably by state so students should expect various course objectives and skills to be learned.
Training to become a paramedic explores several more complicated procedures and practices. Students study how to properly give shots and use devices for airway management. Education focuses on training students to restart hearts, clear blocked airways, and administer intravenous fluids. Coursework integrates many subjects at an advanced level such as rescue practices, cardiology conditions, and nervous systems. This level of training requires the most class time, which typically requires at least 1,000 credit hours.
All EMTs are required to be licensed by the state in which they practice. The National Registry for Emergency Medical Technicians administers examinations based on theory, clinical, and filed experience. To stay up-to-date professionals are required to continue training typically every two years to keep their licensure.
Learning to help people in crisis situations is a skill set that students can apply directly to careers in the medical profession. Students can become EMTs in less than a year. By enrolling in an accredited program, students can ensure a quality education will be received. Agencies like the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health education Programs (CAAHEP) are approved to fully accredited schools and colleges that meet the requirements.
