Ems Paramedic

Is anyone a paid Paramedic and PA? Is it possible to work both jobs?
I will be graduating college soon with a major in Athletic Training. I love ems and emergency medicine, soon I will be an EMT-I. After college I thought of becoming a paramedic while I finish some classes for PA school. Is it possible to work as both a paramedic and PA? Has anyone heard of hours that would allow this to work? Any information or opinions will be great. No bs please
-thanks
The hours would be difficult to work around for PA school with the shifts in EMS. Those I have known to go on to PA school have teched in the ER.
It is difficult being dually licensed. Your assessment skills will no longer be at the same level of a Paramedic and you will get frustrated with the limited protocols. I hold an RN license with my Paramedic and I can see things I could do differently but the protocols I have when I’m working EMS don’t allow for must deviation even with med control contact. The physicians at the ER will sometimes expect me to act like an RN with my ICU and ER background but I have to say I am just following EMS protocols. If you document what you actually know, in court they will ask why you didn’t act upon that. If you don’t document your assessment as you know it or should know it from your advanced training, they do have every right to mention your higher license in court. There is a NJ case right now involving an RN working as an EMT that involves this situation. The BON and the courts will both say as an RN this person should have known better. I can’t imagine it being any different as a PA. In fact, I would say it would be even more of a darned if you do and darned if you don’t once you get to that level of education. If you constantly call med control with your findings for additional orders, med control and your medical director will eventually ask you what license you are working under. A medical director and EMS agency may not want exceptions under their protocols, scope and ALS license. You could probably work out the hours to do both but the limited scope you are expected to practice under may cause professional conflicts and frustration within yourself as well. You will also have to consider the continuing education requirements as a PA which you will have to keep up which also includes those not necessarily mandated by the state but by your employer and the profession itself.
I agree with contacting the PA board before working as both. I think it would be more beneficial if you would find a job utilizing your PA education and skills. There are SCTs that utilize PAs and at more PAs specialize in emergency medicine, there will be more positions in the ER and maybe even flight. But then maybe just being a Paramedic and skipping PA school might also be a choice you can make.

Bringing Out the Dead $9.98 Martin Scorsese comes home to the mean streets of New York with Bringing Out the Dead, the hyperkinetic tale of an ambulance driver (Nicolas Cage) on three sleep-deprived, adrenaline-fueled nights amongst the dead and dying of the city. Less a coherent narrative than a mood piece, the film is a welcome return to form for Scorsese, who takes Joe Connelly’s memoir and spins it into a slightly sur… |
