Bolt Cutters Can Cut Through Just About Anything – ToolsRUs

If you need something to cut through solid steel surfaces like chains, bolts, padlocks and wire, pick up a pair of bolt cutters, also called bolt croppers. Giving the operator plenty of leverage while generating a over two tonnes of force, these are nonetheless very simple tools. Everyone from do-it-yourselfers and handymen to law enforcement personnel and mechanics should have a pair of bolt cutters on hand.

Consisting of two long handles each attached to a blade connected by a pivot point, bolt croppers feature a basic design. When the handles are pulled apart, each pivot moves inward towards the other. This moves the blades apart. When the handles are brought back together, the pivot points move away from each and straighten out, bringing the blades together with a tremendous amount of lever force behind them. Large bolt cutters can achieve 4,000 or more pounds of force which is vastly more than is needed to pull the handles apart and bring them back together.

Common cutter types include angle cut, centre cut, clipper cut and shear cut. Featuring blades that fan out from each other and form a V-shape, the angle-cut variety lets the blades fit easily against a bolt. They usually form a maximum 25- to 35-degree angle. Another style is centre-cut type with blades that are spaced equidistantly. Shear cutters have inverted, scissor-like blades, whereas clipper cutters cut along a plane perpendicular to the motion of the handles, so you can come at a bolt from the top down.

All types feature blades made of durable, high-strenght steel, although handles vary from maker to maker. Very common are drop-forged or solid steel tubular handles, and these typically feature some type of rubber grip to prevent slipping. Ligher handles found on some cutters are made of fiberglass. These not only weigh less, but they not electrically conductive, so they are sometimes used to cut live wire.

The amount of cutting force generated depends on the length of the tool. Common lengths include 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 42 inches. Longer-handled cutters more easily cut through the thickest materials. Given the right size tool, a good pair of bolt cutters provides you with all of the cutting force needed to bite through just about anything their blades can get around.
