In a recent film, one modern physician describes what life was like for general practitioners who lived and worked in his city a century ago. The very first while man to live in this city, strangely enough, was a physician. This doctor happened to be with an exploratory expedition that was passing through the community. He returned to his successful and money-making medical practice after he realized how few patients would be available in such an area.

At that time in history there were quite a few physicians in the area already, but they were having a tough time making a living in an area that had few people there and money was definitely scarce. Back in those days it took a young man with a lot of grit to enter the field of medicine. It proved to be a difficult profession with unknown income, that did not work traditional days or hours. Although there were a few appreciated patients who could afford to pay their medical bills, many more existed who could not.

Not many evenings went by that the physicians weren’t called to tend to a patient. At these times, both the doctor and his slumbering neighbors were startled out of sleep by the banging on the front door. Then, once he hitched up a horse or two to the buggy, the sleepy doctor would set out on a chilly trek outside of the area. Payment was not always made in coin for the country doctor. They often had no choice but to accept payment in kind, in the form of a chicken, a pig, or eggs while other patients worked off their bill. Needless to say, a few of the more industrious physicians sold a few medicines they had home brewed on the side. This particular pioneer doctor was one of those men.

An alternate physician who possessed numerous degrees and post graduate awards, marketed, vended, and made various treatments in the days when ethics proved to be more relaxed. His neuralgia and headache treatments were moderately successful. At a price of three doses for ten cents, the client was promised that his problem would go away in about five to 20 minutes.

Certain physicians were able to earn some extra money by becoming a drug merchant. A particularly enterprising doctor introduced the first drug store to town and cleverly positioned it on a main street. Three more physicians quickly followed suit. Before long, cities began constructing hospitals where doctors could practice medicine in reasonably clean and safe surroundings. Eventually, doctors began practicing medicine in accordance with a standard code of conduct and ethics, giving the public a high degree of confidence that their medical needs would be well provided in a  modern hospital setting.
