How big of a “knife” can you carry in California(orange county)?
My question is: How big of a dirk/dagger/knife can you carry in California, specifically Orange County?
I’ve been reading California Penal Codes all night and could not get a straight answer I need.
I got the info about folders, and I know I could carry a dirk/dagger/ and knife as long as it is visible completely on the belt and it is sheathed.
If there is no length limit, would that mean even a sword is counted as a dirk/dagger/knife?
If you are wondering, I’m training in Philippine Martial arts of Kahli and Escrima as well as Japanese Kendo. I’m not really going to pack a sword on me at all times.
There is no state law regulating knives by length (other than switchblades and in certain locations such as government buildings and schools). As you suspect, a sword would come under the definition of dirk/dagger, meaning you could not carry it concealed on your person (difficult with a sword). You are misreading the sheath provision–what that says is that a knife carried openly in a belt sheath is not concealed, it does not say it has to be in a sheath, it just cannot be concealed on your person.
There may be some local ordinance on the subject, but the enforceability of such local laws is questionable.
