Advice for Users of Debit Cards

Are you a consumer or a seller with a proper merchant  account service in tow? Maybe you’re both. The Internet has been indescribably leveling in more ways than one. Those that used to buy, now sell, and those who sell, well, they continue to sell but they’ve always had to do some buying along the way. Yet, no matter how it’s diced, what everybody can agree on is that we are all payers. We pay at the pump, we pay at the supermarket, and we pay on our computer screens. We even pay through our cell phones.

If you’re one of the millions who’ve set up shop online to sell handmade or hand-selected wares through the Internet, you’ve probably become somewhat of a finance expert, ever-familiar with the finer inner-workings of such matters as the structural support afforded by a credit  card processing service. But even the experts don’t shy away from going out and about to collect even more monetary tips. Paying never ceases and perhaps you wouldn’t mind receiving some glistening pearls of wisdom about how you could wield your debit card to procure better advantages.

Even those with the money-smart credentials that come from owning retail  merchant accounts have been known to employ the following strategy when attempting to gain the upper hand on expenses: using debit cards instead of credit cards, for personal purchases, that is. When you insist on supplanting credit card payments with payments by debit cards as a tactic for living within your means, there are certain issues over which you must remain vigilant. Overdraft fees are one financial concern that deserves special attention. That’s because they factor into the particular money glitches of debit cards, and these are known to occur a lot more often than many expect.

Savvy retail merchants, holders of ecommerce  merchant accounts, and everyday buying individuals rallied to get the government to do something about bank fees. Concerning overdraft fees, last year the Federal Reserve ruled that banks would no longer be able to charge account holders for their overdrafting ways. In lieu of those charges, banks have been instructed to take necessary measures to ensure that purchases causing an overdraft are rejected immediately. However, if you’ve signed up for one of your bank’s optional protection plans, purchases that overdraft your account will be carried out as before and you will still be responsible for paying back the bank for any credit they extend to you. In other words, the overdraft fees have not completely gone away. The best advice is the simplest: watch your accounts’ fluctuations closely.
