Defense Tool

What do you think would act as a beter home defense weapon/firearm/tool?

Don’t say mace or pepper spray, i’ve got that. im talking about something with a bit bigger…punch in it. Typically I’m a shotgun guy, but i’d like to know if a sidearm could or should be preferred. especially nonlethal rounds
870 Remmington already in possesion. has been my trusted hunting partner for 8 years, but its barrel is bulky indoors.
i know this because i’ve already had this problem with an unwanted visitor on the farm a couple a months ago. yes dogs do work well. German shepards i prefer

If you ever have a reason to use a firearm against a human being, you had better be justified in using deadly force and you should USE deadly force. If you have a situation in which you are legally allowed to shoot an intruder you are not in a situation that allows you to screw around with “non-lethal rounds.” That’s a really good way to end up dead because the bad guy will turn the tables on you.

The number one best effective tool against burglars is a dog. It doesn’t matter what kind of dog – as long as it will bark if someone tries to enter. Convicted burglars who have participated in research studies are almost unanimous when they say they avoid homes with dogs. (Interestingly, they are more likely to target homes they know or believe contain firearms and tend to be unconcerned with “security” notices..)

With regard to a firearm for home defense? I’d recommend the .870 Remington. Chambering a round will scare the crap out of ANYONE who hears it and it doesn’t matter if it’s completely dark because as long as you aim in the correct general direction you’ll hit something. Plus the pellets are unlikely to take out a neighbor.

If you are dead set on a pistol, I would say it depends on where you live. If you are in an apartment, I’d encourage you to lean more toward a .22 or a .32 because you don’t want to risk a round punching through the wall and taking out your neighbor. If you are in a house and/or have decent walls, maybe you’d prefer a 9 mil.
