Does black bamboo change color once it is cut?

I bought a small black bamboo plant recently. It was attached to a dead, cut, tannish-colored culm, which, I suspect was planted inground and developed a thin branch that eventually developed roots. The man guaranteed it was black bamboo. I was just wondering why the mother culm was tan and not black, unless black bamboo really changes color once it is cut off.

no it doesnt i have growing in my garden. the tan coloured part you mention could be a grafting point.
