toshiba dvd/vcr combo pack problems?

i have a toshiba dvd/vcr combo pack and everytime i put a vhs in it, it starts for a couple minutes then the whole thing shuts off.. But it works fine for the dvd. When the tv shows the play triangle when hte vhs is loading SP pops up as well? does this have anything to do with it? any solutions!?!

There are at least these possibilities, and there may be others:

Some tape housings are poorly made, and pieces of their
internal structure can break off and jam one or both reels.

All videocassette housings (should) have reel locks that keep
the tape from becoming excessively loose inside the cassette.
Sometimes these do not work properly due to shell damage
or because the pin in the VCR that causes them to be released
is not long enough to fully disengage them.
I have remedied this by removing the locks, but the correct
procedure is to put the reels and tape in a replacement shell.

The tape may be wound with insufficient or excessive tension;
if loose, it may have a ‘bump’ that prevents full rotation of a reel,
and if tight, it may have deformed a reel flange to the extent
that it jams inside the housing.

Poor grades of tape and/or deposits on the lower (nonrotating)
half of the cylinder may prevent smooth and easy tape movement.

The cassette carriage may not be lowering to the proper position.
One VCR I worked with had this problem; as a remedy,
we simply pressed the cassette down after it went in.

Broken or slipping belt or other rubber drive part in the tape transport.

Excessive holdback tension applied to the supply reel.

Capstan motor or the circuit driving it.

Cylinder motor or the circuit driving it.

Inability of the transport to thread the tape properly
due to failure of or damage to one or more parts.

“Mode switch” problems.
This refers to a switch or other part that ‘informs’ the microprocessor
as to the function for which the transport is mechanically positioned.

Microprocessor failure.

Power supply problems.

As you can easily see, the unit may need professional attention.
