How much power does a columbia river dam make?
There are 14 hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River with a total capacity of 25,500 Megawatts. Three are in Canada. There are 26 more hydroelectric dams on tributaries of the Columbia – such as the Snake River, which add another 8,700 Megawatts. The amount of electricity generated depends on several factors but mostly on the amount of water in the river. In a really good year the generators may run almost continuously, in a bad year the capacity factor may be down to 35%. It averages around 52%.
At 52% capacity, the 14 dams on the river would generate 114 Tera-watt Hours. The largest dam is the Grand Coulee Dam at 6809 Megawatts.
In 2007, Grand Coulee generated 25 Tera-watt Hours, making it the second largest producing plant in the US (Palo Verde nuclear plant was highest at 27 Tera-watt hours). 2007 was a rather dryer year and capacity factor was 42%. In 2007, Grand Coulee generated 0.6% of all the electricity consumed in the United States (4,167 Tera-watt Hours).
At the other end of the scale, the Keenleyside Dam in British Columbia is the smallest dam on the Columbia River itself. Its capacity is 185 Megawatts and it generated a little more than 1.1 Tera-watt hours of electricity in 2007.
