Neck Pain and Office Chairs- It Could Be The Real Problem

However, the spine needs to have movement throughout the day, but for most workers at a desk this isn’t possible. Once you consider the standard chairs in an office it can leave the body confined for long periods of time and contribute to the vast amount of pressure that is placed on the spine. Chairs that do not have back and height adjustments end up restricting the body even more, which of course can lead to back and neck pain as well.

The estimates suggest that 11 million days of absence occurs each year due to neck pain, which costs industries about $5 billion per year. Did you know that there are 12 million consultations for neck pain every single year? After the proper research was conducted, the main reason was because of extensive sitting in a poorly designed chair.

When you look at the research of cellular biology, the cartilage cells of our discs have to deal with intense pressure. This translates into a lack of nourishment from the blood supply because the body is immobile. The discs can lose their nourished state and eventually lead to acute neck and back pain. It’s even possible for these situations to become worse and cause fatalities or temporary mobility.

Dr. Julia Hush conducted a study that was published in the European Spine Journal that found 15% to 44% suffer some sort of pain throughout any one year. Another study has suggested that office-workers are at a higher risk than others when it comes to neck pain. Even more astonishing was that female workers were 3 times more likely to develop neck pain. Also, if you have extreme levels of personal psychological stress you are 1.5 times more likely to endure neck pain.

Most extreme issues of neck pain result in a visit to the local chiropractor to help alleviate the pain. However, there is one solution which is much easier to do so it doesn’t get any worse. All you have to do is purchase a new ergonomic office chair, which helps maximize your back support and maintain the right posture while sitting. Keep in mind it will need to be adjusted appropriately if it is going to make a difference.

If you purchase one that has a headrest you will improve your neck comfort even more. Once you have the posture, you will be able to decrease your pain and work more productively throughout each day.
