Will i be stationed before Coast Guard School and career should i choose?

I am going to basic training for the Coast Guard on Oct. 6. My recruiter keeps talking about going to school for different careers in the Coast Guard I was wondering if I would get stationed before i go to school or after?

Well, first off, as an enlisted member in the Coast Guard, you won’t be a helo pilot… that is restricted for ONLY commissioned officers.

You are going in on an open contract – which means you won’t have an official “job” when you get to your first unit (which will be right after Boot Camp). This will give you a GREAT opportunity to see all the ratings we have in action… you’ll be able to talk to folks who love their jobs – as well as the few that don’t like their jobs. This is one of the things that I really like about the Coast Guard – we give you a chance to see what the various career fields do on a daily basis BEFORE we make you choose a rating.

When you hit your first unit – be a sponge – ask everyone what their rating is and what they like about it and what they don’t like about it. From there, you’ll be able to make an informed decision about what you may want to do for the rest of your time in – whether it’s for four years or for 30+.
