I have a sword for cutting and it does have some spots on it.
Make sure it is clean before storing. Use the proper oil and only an extremely lite coating. Apply oil and then remove the excess with a clean dry cotton cloth. Do not touch with bare hands and replace it in scabbard. It can be stored in normal house conditions for years that way. Do use the right Oil not silicone based oil. Not too much oil as it attracts moisture. The Idea is to block Air and moisture with the thin coat of oil. More is not better. You can use gun oil or oil from a kit for swords. Don’t be cheap get the kit. It will last for years and years. Inspect the sword every year or so and treat any sign of rust with the polishing kit.
You should hardly ever find any rust. If you do find signs of rust it is important to treat it quickly before it pits the steel to deep to polish out. It is amazing how swords and guns attract fingers. No matter how much you beg them don’t touch. Polishing compound for steel can be bought separately in tubes from hardware stores; any good sport store will have a good gun oil if you want to save some money and have other uses for the polishing compound. Be sure to remove all the polishing compound before applying the oil. In the care of steel clean is the key. Dirt is the enemy. Your sword “for cutting” would benefit from polish and light oiling. We have practice swords in our school that are 12 or more years old and look fairly good because of fair treatment.
