Celluloid Handle

Celluloid Handle
Who was it that discovered or invented plastic?

There was a forerunner called celluloid that was both highly inflammable and explosive. This material was what movie film was made of but considered highly dangerous to handle.

Celluloid was nitrocellulose mixed with camphor, I think.

The first fully synthetic polymer was Bakelite, a phenol/formaldehyde thermoset resin. Leo Baekeland [I think that is how it is spelled] invented it. There were two types, resole and novolac, though I no longer recall what distinguished them.
The first application was as a support for a coil [electric].
