Is a Balisong Knife (Butterfly Knife) illegal in Texas?

I was interested in purchasing one. I am only 16, but my father often times buys me knives and swords that I collect. I was looking into buying a Balisong Knife with a 4.5 inch blade. Is this illegal?

“Is it legal?” is an incomplete question. What’s likely important to you is whether it’s illegal to own them, and whether it’s legal to carry them.

You CAN legally own them. There is virtually no law anywhere in the US that controls what kind of knife you can own and keep inside your house. And Texas Law 46.05 (d)(1) specifically allows for ownership of such items as a curio/collector’s item.

It is however illegal to carry a balisong in Texas, because they courts have ruled they are the same as a switchblade (46.05 Prohibited Weapons).
