This year’s catwalk trends are difficult to sum up in one sentence as there are a vast range of colours and styles to choose from. It does, however, give us the chance to explore a range of styles from the 1920s to the 1980s. Moreover, with the popularity of period based and cult TV shows, the vintage look hasn’t ever been so appealing.
If you want to encapsulate the sultry 1920s or 1930s look, purple or red is your colour. These tones are a must have for anybody wanting to capture that vintage look. It is advised to always use a good concealer foundation and powder for the lipstick to contrast against. This style has become popular with the success of TV shows like Boardwalk Empire.
The era of the Beatles, peace and hippies brought about a huge change to the world of fashion and make up. In Mad Men, we can see the more conservative and elegant trends set by former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. This was also the same decade in which Mary Quant designed the mini skirt. The late 1960s and the summer of love introduced bell-bottoms, hair bands and loose gypsy tops to the world. Darker shades of lipstick became less prominent as the natural look took over. Nude and light pink lip gloss became the most sought-after colours of lip make up. This look was accompanied with dark eye make up and dark mascara.
This trend carried on into the 1970s and was incorporated with Farrah Fawcett’s flicked out hair. This make up fashion lasted until the latter half of the decade. Darker shades of make up grew in popularity once again with the stardom of David Bowie and Adam and the Ants. This period was all about exploring the unexplored. Furthermore, new styles of music like punk and new wave had a massive influence in the way people dressed and applied cosmetics.
Over the past few years, pale make up has started to become more popular due to the success of vampire dramas like Vampire Diaries and True Blood. Here you have a choice of different looks to go for.
