Where should the three way pan handle of my tripod go?

Whenever I use a tripod, I always feel awkward about where the pan handle for the vertical control goes. Most of the time it’s hitting me in the collar bone and preventing me from actually getting close enough to my camera to see through the lens…

Which head do you have?

My professional tripod’s pan and tilt head has three handles and I chose the horizontal rotation (pan) handle to face towards me, whereas the two horizontal tilt handles to face my two hands.
But I guess that’s because of the way it’s built anyway…

I think the best way to use it, if it only has two handles, is to let the pan handle face you and the vertical handle to face your right or left hand (that would depend on the model), so you can more easily pan instead of tilting, since most people use that function more.

Unless of course it’s a small head and the handle gets in the way, in which case I see no solution but to use it reversed.

But again, this is a matter of personal taste, if it’s comfortable for you you have no reason to change anything…
