Grace has 16 jellybeans in her pocket. She has 8 red, 4 green, and 4 blue. What is the minimum number of jellybeans she must take out of her pocket to ensure she has one of each color?
a. 4
b. 8
c. 12
d. 13
e. 16
can someone please explain how to solve this problem =( thank you so muchhh :-*
It is 13, I arrived at this answer by logical thinking.
If she pulls 4 out, she could get 4 of just red, blue, or green, or possibly a mixture.
If she pulls 8, she could get 4 red and 4 green, 4 green and 4 blue, any combination like that, or even 8 red.
If she pulled 12, she could get 8 red and 4 green, or 8 red and 4 blue.
However, if she pulls 13, she could get all 8 red, and all 4 of one of the other colours, leaving one jellybean leftover which would HAVE to be of the last colour.
