The gut hook is used by first cutting a small incision in the sternum of the animal just under the hide, but not inside the gut cavity and inserting the hook under the skin – making sure not to cut into the thoratic cavity.
Held at the correct angle – you pull it along the center of the animal until you get the penis, go right or left, then to the anus. The hook part sits in the non-connective part of the animal between the hide and the protective covering of the thoratic cavity that all mamals have.
The gut hook is nearly impossible to sharpen unless you have esperience sharpening serrated blades with a thin ceramic stone. For this reason you never, ever, use the gut hook cuttung edge for anything except for eviscerating an animal…….. because if this part of the blade is not razor sharp it will bind, and, keep pulling out. You get an uneven tear across the animal’s belly – or worse – it doesn’t work at all.
A modified type gut hook looking feature is very common on dive knives – this is actually a self rescure feature for cutting yourself out of a net or being tangle in a line. Be sure the knife you buy is a hunting knife with a gut hook – and not a diving knife with a net cutter. The diving knife if too big for deer……… although perferct for grizzly bear and moose.
