Remington 700 Replacement Triggers

The single greatest investment you can make in accurising an older Remington 700 rifle is a trigger upgrade.  Upgrading can involve stoning the mating surfaces of the factory trigger, exchanging some of its components for polished aftermarket versions or dropping in a whole new adjustable trigger unit. This piece will cover three drop in, or semi drop in replacement trigger units from Timney, Shilen and Arnold Jewell.

Most hunters are not hardcore gun nuts but will want to wring extra accuracy out of a stock Remington ADL or BDL without spending new rifle money. A hunter will want a trigger pull that is safe with numb fingers from a unit with a safety fitted. Timney manufacture a range of affordable drop in units for rifles including the Remington 700. The Model 510 Remington 700 Timney trigger with safety also fits the Models 7, 721 and 722 including models with the ISS bolt lock. The Timney Rem 700 trigger safety does not lock the bolt closed even when the rifle was formerly fitted with a bolt lock. It locks the trigger not the sear and the trigger will stay in the position it was in when the safety was applied. The Timney Rem 700 trigger offers a pull from 1.5 -4lb for deer hunting and general purpose use with a crisp clean let-off and a 3/8″ (9.5 mm) serrated blade that may require some material removing from the stock to fit. Creep and backlash are also adjustable. This unit is made of steel, not stainless, but hardened appropriately throughout.

Bench rest shooters want a very light, utterly predictable pull in a unit without a safety.  The Remington 700 competition trigger from Shilen is such a model that will fit the 40X rifle and XP100 pistol.  With a crisp, light 2 to 6 ounce break, the Shilen Rem 700 trigger is perfect for bench rest. All mating surfaces are polished and heat treated for a smooth, quality feel in use. Lock nuts secure the adjusters from loosening under recoil or vibration. The unit could not be simpler to fit – two pins secure it in the unit. No safety is fitted and the unit can be fitted to right or left handed actions.

Hardcore gun enthusiasts specifying a new custom rifle or seriously accurising a factory rifle will not want to compromise.  The Rolls-Royce of triggers is the Jewell Remington 700 trigger.  The Jewell Remington 700 trigger is a no compromise unit – to the point that some custom rifle makers wont let a rifle leave their workshop without one fitted. The entire unit is machined from stainless steel – internals from 440 steel heat treated to RC 52 and the housing of 300 series stainless steel sheet.  The Jewell 700 trigger has a patented mechanism that covers the full spectrum of varmint, bench rest, target, sniping and other precision disciplines with flawless performance and utter reliability. With the Jewell trigger all three adjustments can be accessed without removing the rifle from its stock. The settings are secured by inserts made of nylon. The adjustments simply will not move unless you move them. Two versions of this trigger are avaliable for Remington rifles.

The safety and bottom bolt release equpped Remington Hunter Varmint Rifle Trigger or RHVR has a pull that can be set between 1.5 and 48 ounces. IT will fit any right hand actioned 700 or 40X.

The Remington Bench Rest Trigger (BR) is a dedicated bench rest version that adjusts between 1.5 and 3 oz. Again, this unit will fit the 700 and 40X, this time in either handed action.
