DIY Water Heater Installation

This article is brought to you by Plumber Lake Orion, A Website Dedicated to Helping Lake Orion, MI residents With Their Plumbing Problems.

I know what you are thinking. What the heck is all of this water around my water heater? That’s when you realized you had a leak coming out the bottom of your water tank. It is almost time for Christmas and now you have to get new water heater and pay someone for the water heater installation. How much can this cost me? Can I afford it?

I need hot water. Let me relieve your stress for a minute even though a water heater is going to cost you some money. You can some a lot of money on the installation if you do it yourself.

You can expect to save around 3 or 4 hundred dollars by installing your heater yourself, this will all depend on the area you live in of course. If you are wondering if you are able to install your own water heater ask yourself these questions.

Can I follow Directions?

Can I use tools such as a pipe wrench or channel locks?

Do I know how to go to the home center and someone what shark bite fittings are?

If you answer yes to these questions and are used to doing projects around your home you should have no problem installing your own water heater. Now if you think you may be very insure of this task. Just follow the directions in this article and although it may take a little longer you should be fine installing the water heater yourself.

Equipment And Materials You Will Require:

1 Water Heater-  Install what you are taking out if you’ve got a 40 gallon and wish to improve to a 50 gallon now’s the time to do it. In case you do have a very 50 gallon I DO NOT advocates switching to anything lower than what you have.

2.¾ Fittings – I would grab 2 3/4 couplings and a few 3/4 elbows in case you need to make changes to the water pipe. Verify what style of pipe you have going to your water heater. This might be copper, CPVC, PEX or galvanized. I suggest getting Shark Bite ¾ fittings because there’re very trouble-free to install with PEX, CPVC and copper piping. When you have got galvanized pipe you may need to get a conversion fitting and adapt to one of the other pipes for less complicated replacement.

3. Black Pipe Fittings – You may need some ½ black pipe couplings and 90′s to extend or shorten the gas line linking to the heater. You will also want to install the gas line list because this way you will know your exact monuments and exact fittings our need to buy.

4.2 – ¾ dielectrics. Always switch the dielectrics when replacing a new water heater. Ensure you get the appropriate dielectrics for the piping material you have got in your house.

5. T&P Valve more often than not comes with the brand new heaters.

6. Torch, Flux, Solder, sand paper

7. Channel Locks or offset pliers

8. Pipe Wrench

9. Pipe Thread solution or Teflon tape

10. Garden hose.

Now that we’ve got all of our materials let’s get started. The 1st step is always to shut down the main water line to the dwelling. Next Turn off the gas vale at the gas line running to the water heater. Find a floor drain nearby and run end into the floor drain. Next take the threaded end of the hose and connect it to the bottom of the water heater just like you connect it outside. Turn on the valve (this looks like an outside hose bib) and let the heater start to drain.

At the moment go throughout your house and switch on all the faucets. Be sure you leave the faucets in the on position and you’ve cold and hot water turned on. This will allow all of the water to drain from the heater a great deal faster.

While the water is draining from the old heater, Unbox the brand new water heater. First pipe dope the two shafts coming out the top of the heater. Once these are doped screw on the new dielectrics. You will now want to put some Teflon tape and pipe dope on the T&P valve. The T&P valve will screw into the side of the water heater please note some water heaters have the T&P valve screw into the top of the heater. This is common as well. You may need to use your pipe wrench for getting that last turn in so the valve points down.

Once the old heater is finished draining disconnect the gas pipe along at the union fitting. The union fitting allows threaded pipes to be connected together when you are working from opposite ends of threaded pipe. The union fitting has a big middle. Now disconnect the remainder of the pipe ONLY from the union to where the pipe connects into the water heaters temperature valve.

Let’s move on to the water pipes. First take you channel locks and un screw the dielectrics from the heater just as you did the black union fitting. They should disconnect much like the gas pipe union fittings. Cut off the old dielectrics on the copper or other piping you might have.

Once all the pipes are disconnected on the water heater and it does not seem like there’s anything left in the tank, move the old heater to the side to make room for the new tank. Don’t forget to leave enough room to get the new heater in place. If you’ve got a tiny area you might have to merely remove the old water heater to produce room for the new water heater.

Put the new heater in place and position it under the existing water pipes. If you notice you’ll need to modify some water piping, leave the pipe using the cold water valve the straight pipe and make changes to the hot water side.

You will now want to connect the water pipes to the heater. Use the shark bite fittings and install them like any other piping material. It is possible you may have to solder the brand new dielectrics to your water piping if you have got copper pipe. When soldering the dielectrics I recommend you determine the amount of pipe you need from your dielectric to the coupling and cut it to length and solder it on the ground. This will likely make for a better solder job. You will also wish to remove the washers belonging to the dielectrics so you don’t burn them.

Now you have got the water pipe all hooked up. Before we turn on the water, you will want to put the rubber washers back into the dielectrics and tighten them down. also be sure to let everything cool before you replace the washer. You will want to leave the faucets on in order to bleed all of the air out of the system.

Now you will know what you require for gas pipe. Hook up the gas pipe to your heater. If you are lucky the gas pipe will line up without making any changes. However there are many times you have to add or subtract a fitting or two. This is why I leave the gas for last because now I know what fittings I will need to get the gas pipe hooked up. The nice thing with gas pipe is it comes in many different sizes so finding the write pipe is easy.

Once all of the air is bleed from the system turn off the faucets. Let the water heater fill up before you light the pilot light. Most new heaters employ a manual lighting system. This works just like a gas grill does. You push in the pilot button and click the clicker and it’ll light the pilot light. Keep holding the pilot knob down for about 45 seconds, then turn the heater to a or b any hotter can shorten the life of the burner. You’ll now have hot water in about 30 to 45 minutes determined by the size of your tank.
