Car salesmen: how low will a car dealer go?

I’m going to a dealer to buy a used car. The internet price is $20,995. Is it unrealistic to offer $19K? I’ve never actually bought a car from a dealership, so I’m trying to figure out how much flexibility a dealership truly has in their asking price. In other words, are they paying $15K with the idea that selling it for anything above a 30% markup is good? Or are they paying $18K with the idea that selling for anything below $20K is simply not worth it.

How low price you can purchase a vehicle for depends on your level of knowledge.

When you say the Internet price is $20,995 a few factors come into play, if its fresh inventory its most likely marked up $3 to $4000. range and a fair price would be somewhere in the middle.

On the other hand if its an old sticker it could be marked down showing little or no profit, I realize my answer don’t tell you much but then again you never included type vehicle , year or miles.
