Basket Hilt
Please help me in identifying my sword.?
The sword came from Germany
The sword is 32 inches long. The metal basket is 6 inches long with a 3/4 inch curled lip. The basket has a 7 centimeter circle with a rearing horse with a crown on the left inside and flared wing eagle with a crown on the right inside. There is a hour glass shaped emblem in the center of of the circle with a star in it’s center. The rearing horse and the flared eagle are on each side of the emblem. The top of the emblem has 3 fanned plumes with their tops bent over.
There is some kind of lettering on the blade near the hilt. It is not distingishable.
I once was told it may have been made for a feudal baron. The crowned eagle and crowned horse must mean something in German/Austrian/Prussian history.
I couldn’t find the picture of arms that you described but I found a website where you can look up most of the German arms: http://www.ngw.nl/int/dld/germany.htm
It is not a picture of a state arms. I’m guessing it might be a town, village or family arms. If you need any help with translation/interpretation let me know. I’ll be glad to help.
I definately believe it is German, Austrian or Swiss because we have lots of ealges, horses, lions, bears on display on our arms. It’s not African.
