WILL MY MOTOR STILL LOCK?

I have a 1997 Johnson 50hp with the tilt assist which is known for freezing/locking up. Mine does too from time to time, but other times seems to work fine. Anyway, I’m installing a PT-130 made by CMC and was contemplating removing the assist all together. My thoughts are this: 1- When the assist isn’t working the powered system will be working against the frozen cylinder thus causing extra strain on the electric motor. 2- Will I lose the ability to lock the motor in place to keep it from jumping out of the water in reveres if I remove the old assist system? Does anyone know if the CMC unit will struggle to “FIGHT” the frozen assist piston or will it just overcome it with ease? Has anyone already dealt with this problem?

Leave the tilt assist on the outboard. Your outboard clamps and bolts directly onto the CMC unit, so that the entire outboard tilts, including the original tilt assist. It does not utilize the original tilt mechanism in any way.
