What is the highest rank of a military army?

I know there are several titles, but I want the highest possible ranking of a military army. Is it general, or commander, or something else? Basically, what’s the title of the person who takes charge of the army, the person whom the soldiers follow into battle?
Okay, so 5-Star General is the highest of the U.S….anyone know about Japan’s highest army/military rank?

The United States military services discontinued the rank of five stars shortly after WWII. The highest ranks in the military services are and have been General of the Army, Commandant of the Marine Corps, Fleet Admiral!

Those positions still exist however, the highest rank is that of an “O-10″ or four stars!

Of course, the President of the United States is the highest military “commander” as the “Commander in Chief!”
