Indian army is accused of exploiting golf range to make money

The audit report announces that the golf ranges governed by army become channel for making money. The report points out that the army does not only use the golf land for free, but also makes a great deal of money by selling the membership to the civilians and foreigners.

According to the report, the army has some illegal management toward the golf range under their charge. They believe that army owns the largest land in the whole country. Moreover, there are more than 97 ranges are under their control, which cover totally 8000 acres. From the view of the auditors, the army should not employ the land to build golf ranges for golf is not admitted as army activities.

The auditors regard the phenomenon as “worrisome”. To their founding, the army hands over the land to a private company in the name of Army Zone Golf. This company has totally 97 luxurious golf ranges.

The report also tells us that many memberships of the golf club are sold to the civilians and foreigners. The profit is deposited in a team foundation to avoid auditing. Some profit also flow into the private company. That the army even sells membership to civilians and foreigners is inexcusable according to the statement of the report.

But the spokesman of the army contradicts it. Ohm Singh said that the statement that civilians are admitted to the army golf is wrong. He also said that nobody can say there is no mistake to play golf in such beautiful ranges. The private company involved also claims that they do it in the purpose to spread this graceful sport.

Although the army fights back to the accusation, the report adds some worry to Indians. They are likely to think that corruption has penetrated to the most respectful branch. But as far as I know, officers are costumed to playing golf long before and it’s really common for the army camp to own their own golf ranges.
