American Story

Does anyone know the ancient Latin-American story of La Llorona?
Please don’t just post a link, explain if you can, and then give a link maybe. Also did anyone’s parents ever tell them this story and what is the lesson? THe reference popped up in a book I am reading
It is a story about a lady that drowned her kids. Now she is said to walk the earth, mostly next to rivers and lakes, looking for her kids. If she sees you, she will take you as her kid. My mom is Mexican. She never told us any of the Mexican folk lore. It was my Grandmother that told us all the story’s. To me it was a way to scare the kids in to not running off in to the water. In stead off just telling kids the water is dangerous. They would tell them some story that some thing was going to get them and take them away. This is the Mexican way of life. All the story”s are like that. Don’t do this because this thing will come and get you. I have heard her. There is a baranca that runs through my back yard. At night I would hear a lady crying. My friends and I went to play lazer tag in the river. I was hiding under a bridge. I heard a lady crying. It started to get louder and louder. I just climbed out and ran back to the home base. My other friend was there. He just looked at me and said “you heard it too”. My other friend came running and said that he heard the La Llorona. We started to call for the last guy to come out. We say him walking towards us. He said “who was that trying to scare me. Who was pretending to be the La Llorona”. We told him that we all heard it. He took off as fast as we could. We never went back to the river or played lazer tag again.
