How do you find the percentage of the american flag that is red? An actual scale American flag.
Please show work or explain!
Also, let’s pretend I don’t have a computer in front of me, it’s just a piece of paper with the flag and the question, I also have a calculator.
Get the flag: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_United_States.svg
1) Measure the length and width of a short red stripe – A = l x w – and multiply by 4.
2) Measure the length and width of a long red stripe – B = l x w – and multiply by 3.
3) Measure the area of the whole flag: C = l x w
Fraction of flag that’s red = (4A + 3B)/C
Percentage that’s red = 100(4A + 3B)/C
Edit: I was about to post this link ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_United_States#Specifications ) which has the actual specified dimensions. But the original answer will work if you didn’t have access.
